Vacaville Custom Metal & Electric Gates handles pedestrian gate installation in Vacaville, CA for front entries, courtyards, side yards and service access, and the walk gate is consistently the most underestimated opening on a property. It is the gate that gets used most, it is the one a delivery driver touches every week, and on most homes it is the single easiest way onto the property.
A pedestrian gate lives or dies on its hardware. The frame is small and light, so almost nothing fails structurally. What fails is the latch that no longer lines up after the post settles, the self-closing hinge that was never adjusted, and the strike that a shoulder can pop. We build the frame square, set the post on a real footing, and spend the time on the latching. See the rest of our work on the Vacaville custom metal and electric gates homepage.
What’s Included in Our Pedestrian Gate Installation Service
Every pedestrian gate installation includes:
Measurement of the opening, the grade, and the swing direction that actually suits the traffic
Fully welded steel or aluminium frame sized for daily use rather than occasional use
Post footing sized properly, because a leaning walk gate post is what breaks latch alignment
Self-closing hinges and self-latching hardware where the gate encloses a pool or a hazard
Lockable hardware: keyed, thumb-latch, deadbolt, keypad or electric strike
Optional electric strike or maglock tied into your access control or intercom
Powder coat finish, or galvanize first where marsh or marine air reaches
Infill spacing specified for the actual purpose: privacy, pet containment or code compliance
Signs You Need Pedestrian Gate Installation in Vacaville
You need a new or rebuilt pedestrian gate when:
The latch no longer lines up and the gate has to be pulled or lifted to close
The hinge post leans, which means the original footing was too small
A wooden gate has rotted at the bottom rail or the hinge screws have pulled out
The gate does not self-close and self-latch on a pool or hazard enclosure
You want keypad, intercom or electric strike entry rather than a key
The gap under or beside the gate is wide enough for a dog or a child to pass
Our Process, Step by Step
Measure and set the swing
We check the opening, the grade and how people actually approach it. A walk gate that swings the wrong way for the traffic flow gets propped open within a month, which defeats it entirely.
Specify the hardware first
On a pedestrian gate the hardware decides the outcome, so we choose latching, hinges and any electric strike before the frame is drawn, not after.
Fabricate square
Small frames are welded and ground in the shop like any other gate. Square is what keeps a latch aligned once the post inevitably settles a little.
Set the post properly
Undersized walk gate footings are the most common defect we find. A leaning post throws the latch out of alignment permanently, and no amount of hardware adjustment fixes a leaning post.
Hang, adjust and secure
Gate hung, self-closing hinges tensioned, latch aligned, and any electric strike or maglock wired and tested against your intercom or access control.
Finish and hand over
Coating inspected, hardware lubricated, keys or codes handed over, and adjustment points shown to you.

Options and Comparisons
Pedestrian gate latching is where the real decision sits:
Latching option
Security level
Best for
Notes
Gravity or thumb latch
Low
Side yards and service gates behind a secure perimeter
Simple, nothing to fail, nothing to stop a reaching hand
Keyed lockable latch
Medium
Front entry and side yard gates
Keys get copied and lost; still the most common choice
Self-closing, self-latching
Medium
Pool and hazard enclosures
Required by code around pool enclosures; hinge tension needs occasional adjustment
Keypad or smart lock
Medium to high
Households with trades, cleaners or guests coming and going
Codes can be changed and issued per person, with no key handover
Electric strike or maglock
High
Multi-tenant, commercial and gated properties
Ties into intercom and access control; needs power and a fail-safe or fail-secure decision
On any gate enclosing a swimming pool, self-closing and self-latching hardware is not optional and the latch release height is regulated. We build pool enclosure gates to the enclosure requirements rather than to preference, and we tell you when a design you like will not pass.
What Affects the Price
Pedestrian gates are the least expensive gate we build. The variables:
Frame material and infill. Plain picket steel is the baseline; ornamental scrollwork, privacy panel and mixed wood and metal add shop time.
Latching hardware. A thumb latch and an access-controlled electric strike are separated by an order of magnitude.
Electrification. An electric strike, maglock or keypad needs low-voltage power run to the gate.
Post and footing conditions. A post that has to clear irrigation, a root ball or a utility adds excavation.
Finish system. Powder coat inland, galvanize plus powder coat near the marsh and the strait.
Code requirements. Pool enclosure gates carry mandatory hardware that a plain garden gate does not.
Side yards, delivery traffic and older Solano lots
Two very different pedestrian gate problems show up across this service area. In the older grids, downtown Fairfield, Vallejo's Heritage District, Suisun City's Old Town, lots are narrow and the side yard clearance is measured in inches, so the gate has to be built to an odd width and swung in the only direction there is room for. In newer Vacaville and Dixon subdivisions the problem is the opposite: standard openings, but constant delivery traffic through a side gate that was specified for occasional use and is now cycled daily.

Related Services
Most gate projects touch more than one of these. If you are not sure which applies, call us and we
will tell you plainly, including when you need less than you thought.
A pedestrian gate is cycled far more often than the driveway gate beside it, and builder-grade walk gates are specified for the wrong duty entirely. We size hinges and latching for the traffic the gate will actually see, which on most properties means several openings a day, every day, including whatever the delivery driver does to it in a hurry.
Code
Pool and hazard gates built to the enclosure requirement
Gates enclosing a pool must be self-closing and self-latching, and the latch release height is regulated. We build those gates to the enclosure requirement rather than to whatever looks right, and we will tell you before fabrication if a design you have picked out will not satisfy it.
First
Hardware specified before the frame is drawn
On a walk gate the hardware decides the outcome, not the frame. Almost nothing fails structurally at this size. What fails is a latch that drifts out of alignment and a self-closing hinge nobody adjusted. We choose the latching, hinges and any electric strike before the gate is drawn, so the frame is built around the hardware rather than the other way round.

What Solano County Says About Vacaville Custom Metal & Electric Gates
Rated 5 out of 5
They measured the driveway and told me a swing gate would scrape before I ever asked. Ended up with a cantilever slide instead and it has not caught once. Whole thing was welded in their shop and hung in a day.
Dana R.Vacaville · Driveway gate + automationRated 5 out of 5
Our old yard gate had a residential opener on it and it burned out twice in a year. They replaced it with a proper continuous-duty unit and explained exactly why the first one kept failing. Two seasons, no issues.
Marcus T.Fairfield · Commercial cantilever gateRated 5 out of 5
We are in the downtown historic district so the design had to be approved. They drew it to the district's standard and it cleared first time. Galvanised it before the powder coat because of the salt air.

Yes. We install keypads, smart locks, electric strikes and maglocks on walk gates, and we can tie them into an intercom or a wider access control system so the same credential opens the walk gate and the driveway gate. See our security gate systems with access control page.
What hardware does a pool gate need?
Self-closing hinges and a self-latching latch, with the release positioned at the regulated height so a small child cannot reach it. We build to the enclosure requirement rather than to preference, and hinge tension gets checked at handover because a self-closing hinge that no longer closes fully is the same as no hardware at all.
Why does my gate latch stop lining up?
Almost always the hinge post. If the footing was undersized for the leaf weight, the post leans a little each season and the latch drifts out of alignment permanently. Adjusting the latch treats the symptom. The fix is a properly sized footing, which is why we pour to the leaf weight rather than to a standard hole.
Can you match my pedestrian gate to my driveway gate?
Yes, and it is what we would recommend. We take the picket spacing, top rail profile, ornamental detail and finish colour from the driveway gate and carry it across, so the two read as one system rather than as two separate purchases.
