Fairfield splits cleanly at the zip code line and it changes the gate. The 94533 downtown core is an older residential grid with narrow frontages, short driveways and side yards measured in inches, so a swing gate frequently has nowhere to arc into and the answer is a compact slide or a narrow walk gate built to an odd width. West in Green Valley the problem reverses: plenty of room, but foothill lots that fall away across the opening, which is exactly the condition that makes a swing gate scrape partway through its travel. We shoot the grade on both sides of town rather than assuming.

A few inches of fall across an opening is the difference between a swing gate that works and one that scrapes partway through its arc. We put a level on the driveway and measure the fall across the full travel path on every visit, because that one measurement decides swing against slide and it cannot be taken from a photograph.
Sometimes, if the fall across the arc is small and the gate can be hung with enough ground clearance without leaving a gap that defeats the point. On the Green Valley foothill lots the fall is usually too much, and a rolling or cantilever slide gate is the honest answer.
