Benicia's topography does most of the choosing here. The streets climbing above the marina are steep enough that a swing gate on a sloped driveway will bind or scrape partway through its arc, which pushes those properties toward slide gates almost automatically. Down in the historic downtown the constraint is different: lots platted in the 1840s with short frontages and very little room between the house and the street, so there is often no arc room to swing into and no possibility of swinging toward a public sidewalk. Different reasons, same conclusion.
Benicia was platted in 1847 and served as the state capital in 1853 and 1854, and the downtown core still shows it: Victorian gingerbread trim, 19th-century farmhouses and early bungalows, many of them inside a historic district the city first established in 1969 and expanded under the 1990 Downtown Historic Conservation Plan. A few inches of fall across an opening is the difference between a swing gate that works and one that scrapes partway through its arc. We put a level on the driveway and measure the fall across the full travel path on every visit, because that one measurement decides swing against slide and it cannot be taken from a photograph.
Rarely, and we would usually advise against it. A driveway with real fall across the arc means the leaf either scrapes partway through or has to hang with a gap underneath large enough to defeat the gate. Slide gates handle slope properly, which is why most of our hillside work here is cantilever.
